Anglo American has submitted the EIA Report for its proposed Sakatti polymetallic mine for consideration by the authorities at the Lapland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) acting as the coordinating authority. The EIA Report for the mine details the proposed project which includes the extraction of ore using an underground mine, the concentration process located distant from the mire protection area and the hauling of concentrate for further refinement.
“We have engaged in extensive and meticulous work to complete this rigorous EIA. We have worked through a number of alternative mine infrastructures, and we have identified the most suitable mitigation procedures. From these alternatives, we have found a solution that would minimise any impact on the protected natural habitat types, flora, or fauna of the Natura 2000 area”, states Ulla Syrjälä, Principal for Safety & Sustainable Development of Anglo American’s Sakatti project.
“We are happy that our studies have led to this important stage. The surveys show that the project is extremely significant for the regional economy and that it can be implemented in a safely, sustainably and responsible manner. Using the EIA Report as a foundation is a favourable way to continue preparations for the ongoing environmental permit application”, tells Anglo American’s Managing Director for the Sakatti Project, Pertti Lamberg.
All stakeholders can participate in the EIA process. The EIA Report will be viewable on the company’s website and on the website of Finland's Environmental Administration in mid-December.
Public viewing period: 16 December 2020 – 12 February 2021.
The EIA Report will be presented at a public meeting organised in Sodankylä by the coordinating authority on 19 January 2021.
