I started my summer job at AA Sakatti Mining as soon as school finished for the summer break in the beginning of June. I have just finished the ninth grade and I will start high school studies in the coming autumn. This is the first time I have had a real summer job. The first week on the job involved familiarisation with the Sakatti office located in Sodankylä. I was introduced to Anglo American’s way of working and their values. The induction was very comprehensive and I received plenty of new information about the Sakatti Project, the mining industry in general and ore exploration. I had never thought how many different applications metals are needed for!
Safety is one of the core values for Anglo American and I noticed just how well safety is taken into account at Sakatti in every single task conducted. Instructions were very precise and everyone made sure that instructions were also adhered to. All matters and activities are thoroughly examined and contemplated in order to enable these to be done safely and with care. A lot of effort has also been put into the induction arranged for summer workers. Reporting works well at Sakatti and has been made very easy to do. Work-related issues are openly discussed at Sakatti – regardless of whether matter or event was positive or negative, big or small. I was also able to participate in virtual training for remote working that was customised for the entire staff of the Sakatti Project to support remote working.
My second week at work started with warehouse duties. I participated in conducting an inventory of the warehouse. It was nice to see just how many different tasks Sakatti has to offer. There are employees from a wide variety of different sectors, and there are also a number of summer job places available for young people, also this summer. Safety has received special attention in warehouse tasks. If they did not pay enough attention to risk factors, there could be big accidents. Warehouse tasks and work in the field are suitable for boys and girls alike. The tasks are very varied and they are also suitable for young people. The employees at Sakatti were so helpful, so I always got assistance whenever I needed it and it is a nice place to work with great people.
I was so happy when I heard that I had been accepted for a summer job at AA Sakatti Mining. Due to the coronavirus, summer jobs in a number of industries in Finland have been very hard to come by and many young people will not receive the experience summer jobs can provide. The coronavirus crisis also impacted the start of my summer job, its content and conducting the tasks involved, as social distancing, for instance, had to be applied to every working situation.
I was rather astonished to see just how strict the coronavirus instructions were at Sakatti. In fact, many office workers are still doing remote work. My summer job also included remote working. I had never imagined before that a summer job could also be done in this way. I feel very happy that Sakatti has decided to employ summertime workers, even this summer.
