The Sakatti Project involves developing an underground mine, with construction intended to begin at the end of the 2020s, with operations planned to start around 2032.
The Sakatti multi-metal deposit was discovered in 2009. Exploration activities continue in Sodankylä in order to map the mineral potential of the area.
The Sakatti underground deposit is located north of Sodankylä, on the western edge of the Viiankiaapa mire conservation and Natura 2000 area.
You can learn more about Viiankiaapa and the responsible implementation of the mining project by reading our brochure.
The offices and sample handling facilities of the Sakatti Project are in Sodankylä, approximately 2.5 kilometres from the town centre. The mining company also has an office in Oulu and a laboratory in Kempele.
The Sakatti polymetallic deposit contains, in addition to important base metals such as copper, nickel and cobalt, precious metals including platinum, palladium, gold and silver. The deposit is exceptional due to its high metal grades. Ore deposits like Sakatti are rare, and only a few are discovered globally each century.
Based on geological studies, the total mineral resources of the copper-dominated polymetallic Sakatti deposit are estimated at approximately 157 million tonnes. Of this total, around 41 million tonnes are classified as indicated resources and approximately 116 million tonnes as inferred resources.

According to the mineral resource estimate updated in March 2025, the project has sufficient confidence in the adequacy of the resources to support approximately 20 years of mining operations. Anglo American's subsidiary, AA Sakatti Mining Oy, has applied for a mining permit for this period.
In March 2025, the Sakatti mining project was designated a Strategic Project in accordance with the European Commission's Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).
The planning of the Sakatti underground mine is guided by an ambition to set a benchmark for the responsible mining of the future. We are introducing new technologies and continuously developing existing ones. Our operations are carried out with respect for the environment, and we aim to preserve the natural values of Viiankiaapa for future generations.
