Safety First

At Anglo American, safety is our most important value. We invest in a preventive and open safety culture and leadership. Our safety approach is based on the Group-wide Safety, Health and Environment principles (the SHE Way).

Safety is a shared responsibility, and we ensure that both our own employees and contractors receive appropriate safety induction before starting work. Safety principles are also reviewed regularly with employees and contractors who are already working with us. In addition, a risk assessment is always carried out before work begins.

Our key company – level principles include:

  • Zero harm mindset – all incidents and accidents are preventable
  • No repeat incidents – we learn from incidents
  • Clear, uncompromising standards  – safety regulations are non-negotiable.

We report safety- and environmental-related deviations and review them in weekly safety meetings with the entire personnel to increase awareness and continuously improve our safety performance. All meetings begin with a safety share session, where we discuss current safety observations and share safety-related tips.

We believe that proactive safety thinking and a positive attitude toward safety make a difference. We are committed to investing in safety in all aspects of the Sakatti Project and are always ready to further improve occupational safety.

Safety Training for All Personnel

We train all our personnel in safe working practices. Every new employee completes a comprehensive safety induction as well as the Occupational Safety Card training at the beginning of their employment.

The induction programme also includes a driving session, and winter driving is practiced under the guidance of a driving instructor every two years. In our work, we use only vehicles with a five-star safety rating.

Employees working in terrain and in the field also receive training in operating snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). When required, our technicians are additionally trained for working at height as well as for hot work.

We provide our employees with the necessary personal protective equipment and comprehensive occupational health services.

We also regularly organize EA1 first aid training and rescue drills.
