Anglo American has signed a prefeasibility study contract for its Sakatti mining project with AFRY
13 August, 2025
Anglo American's Finnish subsidiary has signed a contract with AFRY, a European leader in engineering, design and advisory services, for the next study phase of the Sakatti mining project. The pre-feasibility study is estimated to be completed by the end of 2026.
The contracted study’s objective is to refine the project details and economic assessment further with more precise and detailed information and to establish a solid groundwork for the final feasibility stage.
The expression of interest was sent to 21 potential international and Finnish companies in November 2024. After a rigorous process, AFRY was selected as the partner for this critical study phase.
“AFRY has demonstrated experience in harsh weather conditions and specifically in executing successful projects in Finland and other Nordic countries, and they have proposed a strong team of key personnel from their organization who have the relevant experience to deliver a successful study. Importantly, we also see that AFRY’s strong safety culture supports our own priority and ambition for zero harm”, says Pertti Lamberg, CEO of Anglo American’s Finnish subsidiary.
Anglo American aims to start Sakatti mining operations in the early 2030s. The company has completed the project's environmental impact assessment and Natura assessment and has submitted a mining permit application to the Finnish Mining Authority Tukes. Earlier this year, the project received strategic project status under the EU's Critical Raw Materials Regulation (CRMA).
