Founding document on cooperation between the Municipality of Sodankylä and the Sakatti Project signed

22 January, 2026

In June 2025, the Sodankylä Municipal Board signed a preliminary cooperation agreement (Letter of Intent) with Anglo American’s Sakatti Project. The agreement has now been formalized in a founding document, and the cooperation group established by the document will begin its work in early 2026.

The aim of the cooperation is to strengthen interaction and joint planning between the municipality and the mining company throughout the entire lifecycle of the mine. Together, the parties will explore solutions that can support the municipality’s strategic goals, including housing, education, vitality, and the development of the regional mining cluster.

“The Sakatti Project will have a significant impact on the development and vitality of the Municipality of Sodankylä. The project is linked to economic activity, employment, housing, and, above all, the environment. Therefore, it is important for the municipality that cooperation works already at this early planning stage,” says Jari Rantapelkonen, Municipal Manager of Sodankylä.

Anglo American emphasizes open dialogue and responsible operations in its Social Way framework.

“As a pioneer in responsible mining, we want to advance the project in close cooperation with local stakeholders, listening to their views and expectations. The municipal agreement creates a strong foundation for collaboration. The Municipality of Sodankylä has taken bold steps to develop new ways to deepen interaction,” says Pertti Lamberg, Managing Director of the Sakatti Project.

The aim of the parties is to establish a cooperation group to promote dialogue, transparency, and trust between the project and the communities that may be affected by it.

The cooperation group will consist of representatives from the municipality, the company, and relevant stakeholders. The final composition of the group will be defined as part of the cooperation model’s preparation process during 2026.
