Sakatti Forest Compensation Nature Reserve
In May 2022, the company acquired nearly 3,000 hectares of jointly owned forest land in Inari as voluntary ecological compensation for the mining project. The protected forest area was acquired in Inari, where a sufficiently large forest area meeting the required criteria was available.
The protection of this forest compensates for direct terrestrial ecological impacts primarily outside the Viiankiaapa protected area, where mine-related infrastructure—such as buildings, the access road, and power lines—would be constructed.
In September 2024, the Lapland ELY Centre issued a decision establishing the Sakatti forest compensation area as a nature reserve. In its decision, the protected area is described as significant in terms of biodiversity values. Protecting the area supports nature conservation, improves ecological connectivity, and expands the core of thesurrounding wilderness area.
Under the Intact Forest Landscape (IFL) definition, the protected area is a largely undisturbed forest. It contains trees of varying ages and abundant deadwood.
